![Architecture & Wine: Marqués de Riscal
In the heart of Rioja Alavesa, Marqués de Riscal merges 19th‑century winemaking tradition with 21st‑century architecture. Founded in 1858 in Elciego, it was one of the first Rioja wineries to adopt Bordeaux‑style ageing, shaping the region’s modern identity.
Perched above the original bodega, the Hotel Marqués de Riscal is a sculptural landmark designed by Frank O. Gehry. Its undulating titanium ribbons in pink, gold, and silver echo the colours of the wine and the label, creating a modern “château” that dances above the vineyards.
Between the historic cellars—where vintages from the first century of the estate are still tasted—and Gehry’s avant‑garde curves, this is architecture that tells the story of wine.
